Take Small Steps Daily to Make Great Strides

It seems impossible to climb a ladder with two out of every three rungs missing.  The steps are just too big.  We often face the same obstacle when it comes to building our businesses and creating our RADical lives.  Our loftiest goals and dreams seem daunting on the surface, and even the first step can appear gigantic.  We don’t know how to create things we have never made before, and we can’t find the rungs to get us to our goal.  Each step is too big.

Every result begins with one step

The answer lies in taking small steps consistently.  Great strides come from small actions taken every day.  Our journeys to success are the culmination of thousands of small steps along the way.  Viewing our future this way allows us to take control by choosing daily steps.

How do we eat an elephant?  One bite at t time.  And the same is true of reaching our loftiest goals.  Getting from here to there is not a giant leap but a series of actions.  Starbucks didn’t appear on every corner overnight (even though it might have seemed so).  They opened those stores one by one.  Day by day, action by action, we can accomplish anything.

The small-step strategy works for all areas of our lives, whether building companies, taking control of our health, or even increasing our walking pace.  Small steps are the way to make significant changes.

Here is a five-step method for making great strides toward our goals through small steps:

  1. Choose a goal.  What is one thing we need to accomplish in the coming year?  Choosing one primary goal each year and committing to the actions necessary is a great way to move forward with intention and results.
  2. List the steps we know.  Frequently, we don’t have all the information we need to make our dreams come true.  That doesn’t matter!  We can learn what we need to know and employ experts to fill in the gaps.  Each step we take reveals new information.  Start with steps we know.
  3. Make the steps small.  We need to take a step every day, so make them manageable and ensure enough rungs for us to climb the ladder.
  4. Repeat steps when needed.  The same action repeated over and over gets us far as well.  When we practice and repeat and refine, our efforts become more powerful.
  5. Take a step—every day.  We can’t climb the ladder without moving up the rungs; the same is true of our goals.  We must keep moving toward them in an ongoing series of small steps.
