“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” — African Proverb
Let’s get brutally honest. If you’re the one doing everything in your business, you’re not leading it — you’re limiting it. You’re not building a company. You’re building a cage. And here’s the truth no one wants to say out loud: refusing to delegate is the surest way to burn out and block your own growth.
Hi, I’m Angie Dobransky, business coach and founder of RAD Strategic Partners. Today, let’s talk about one of the biggest barriers holding business owners back: the fear of delegation. And more importantly, how you can break it — for good.
Why Delegation Matters More Than Ever
Most entrepreneurs start by doing everything themselves — sales, marketing, operations, bookkeeping. That’s normal at the beginning. But if you keep doing it all as you grow, you become the bottleneck your business can’t get around.
According to Harvard Business Review, leaders who delegate effectively are more engaged and more productive. Gallup found companies with strong delegation cultures have 33% higher revenue. Why? Because when you delegate well, you unlock your team’s potential and free yourself to do the highest-value work only you can do.
The Mindset Barriers That Block Delegation
Let’s get real about why delegation is so hard. It’s rarely a skills issue. It’s almost always mindset. Here are the three big fears I see over and over in my coaching:
- “No one can do it like me.” — You’re right, they won’t do it exactly like you. But if they get the right result? That’s what matters.
- Fear of losing control. — Especially around finances or customer relationships. But clinging too tightly doesn’t equal control — it equals stagnation.
- Confusing delegation with abdication. — Delegation isn’t “dump and disappear.” It’s shared ownership with clear expectations.
Recognize any of these? You’re not alone. But you’re also not stuck there. Let’s talk about what effective delegation actually looks like.
Delegation vs. Abdication
One of the biggest mistakes I see is confusing delegation with abdication. Let’s be clear:
- Delegation = shared ownership. You remain involved enough to guide and ensure success. Expectations are clear. Communication is ongoing.
- Abdication = “Here, you handle it. Don’t bother me with details.” That leads to mistakes, frustration, and lost trust.
If you’ve been burned before, chances are you abdicated when you thought you were delegating. But real leadership means staying connected — without micromanaging.
A Real Client Story
One of my clients was doing all their own bookkeeping. It ate up hours every week they could have spent selling, serving clients, or strategizing. When they finally hired a bookkeeper, they didn’t just dump it on them and walk away. They:
- Defined clear expectations
- Created regular reporting and check-ins
- Documented systems that worked for both sides
The result? More strategic time for the owner. Better financial clarity. And the business grew significantly. That’s what real delegation looks like.
How to Know If You’re the Bottleneck
Ask yourself:
- Do projects stall waiting for your personal sign-off?
- Are you drowning in details instead of leading?
- Is your team constantly waiting on you?
If yes, it’s time to ask: Where exactly is it getting stuck? Keep asking until the answer is clear. Often, it’s you.
How to Delegate Well
Ready to break the cycle? Here’s your step-by-step delegation framework:
- Understand the difference between delegation and abdication. Shared ownership is the goal. Stay involved enough to guide success.
- Document the process. Don’t keep it in your head. Write down steps, tools, expectations, and what success looks like.
- Communicate clearly. Tell them not just what to do, but why it matters. What does “done well” look like?
- Let go of “my way.” They won’t do it exactly like you. That’s okay. Results matter more than process.
- Check in regularly. Delegation doesn’t end when you hand it off. Schedule reviews, offer feedback, and support them.
Good delegation is leadership. It’s how you scale your business without losing control — and without losing your sanity.
