“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” — Benjamin Franklin
Let’s be real. The world has proven over and over again that anything can happen. Pandemics. Power outages. Wild weather. Data breaches. Sudden leadership changes or global conflict. We can’t predict the future, but we can control how we respond.
Hi, I’m Angie Dobransky, business coach, founder of RAD Strategic Partners, and your partner for RADical Success. Today, let’s talk about a powerful mindset shift—and an actionable plan—to help you be prepared for anything, both personally and professionally.
Preparedness Is Power, Not Panic
Most people think “preparedness” means something extreme: bunkers, stockpiles, doomsday plans. But true strategic readiness is different. It’s not paranoia—it’s clarity, calm, and leadership in the face of uncertainty.
When everything outside is chaotic, your internal world and your systems need to stay steady. That’s why I teach my clients to focus on what I call the Seven Pillars of Preparation. Let’s dive in.
The 7 Pillars of Preparation
- Communication
In any emergency, staying connected is critical. Have backup plans. How will your team reach each other if cell service goes down? Do you have alternative channels for client communication? Consider secure messaging apps, emergency contact trees, or printed lists of numbers and roles. - Physical Space
What if your office or storefront becomes unusable? Have a plan to shift locations or go remote. Ensure your team has what they need at home: laptops, access credentials, secure networks. Even if you think it “would never happen,” the best leaders plan for the worst. - Data
Your data is your business lifeline. Back it up regularly and test those backups. Use secure, encrypted cloud storage. Don’t forget personal records. Imagine losing your customer database, your contracts, or your accounting files overnight. Proactive protection is far cheaper than reactive recovery. - Teams
Your people matter most. Staff, partners, even family—they all need to know what to do if you’re suddenly unavailable. Create a clear, simple checklist of essential responsibilities. Assign a backup decision maker so momentum doesn’t stop if you can’t be there. - Insurance
Review your coverage. Does it truly reflect your current needs? Business interruption insurance, property damage, liability—all of it should be current and comprehensive. Don’t “set it and forget it.” Schedule an annual review to adjust as your business grows. - Cash
Digital payments are fantastic—until the internet goes down. Always keep some emergency cash on hand. For businesses, establish a line of credit or emergency fund to ensure continuity. This doesn’t just cover disasters. It helps you navigate any unexpected slow period without panic. - Systems
What happens if your internet fails? Power goes out? Have a backup plan for your tech. Consider generators, battery backups, and even old-school manual processes to keep things moving. Your systems should be designed for resilience, not just efficiency.
How to Get Started (Without Getting Overwhelmed)
I get it—this might feel like a lot. But preparedness doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Here’s how to start:
- Pick one pillar—the area that feels most urgent or vulnerable.
- Assess where you stand. What’s already in place? What’s missing?
- Create a simple contingency plan. It doesn’t have to be a novel. Bullet points work.
- Allocate resources. Do you need to buy anything or set aside time to train your team?
- Train your team. Make sure everyone involved knows what to do.
- Review and revise. Set a reminder to update your plan every 6–12 months.
Preparedness is leadership. It shows your team, your clients, and yourself that you’re committed to stability and success, no matter what life throws your way.
